A year in May. My mom bought me a Mr. Beer deluxe kit for my birthday and I got the bug. I'm slowly expanding my kit to let me do more and more. Next is a big pot so I can do more than 4 gallon batches, then a cooler and some copper pipe, then a propane burner...
You have all been down this road. I have long since stopped using the "saving money" argument with my wife and have adopted he "I'm pooling my beer and hobbies budget" tactic to great effect.

Close to 4 years under my belt. I mostly do american ales (APA/AAA/IPA), lagers, some stouts/porters, and the occasional cream ale, belgian, wheat beer, apfelwein or hard lemonade.

I believe I started in January of 2006. I just remember discovering on the internet one day that you could brew your own beer at home and made a random comment about it to the then g/f. She got me a kit for Chirstmas and it was on from there. There have been some lulls along the way due to moving and finances, but I finally went all grain 3-4 years ago and the beer has gotten a lot better and a lot cheaper to make. I just use a cooler and a turkey fryer setup, but another upcoming move will help give me some more brewing space. RIMs toolbox needs to be put together and a dedicated fermentation fridge is a couple of the first things. Then start working on putting together a brewstand from there.

Since December 2010, a Brewers Best IPA kit....turned out ok, really bitter and not in a good way. Did about 6 extract batches and was never really happy with them so I took the jump into all grain and my first one was significantly better despite crappy efficiency.

I stick mostly to the styles I can drink 5 gallons of without getting tired of them; APA, IPA, brown ales, and stouts.

I started in Jan 1997. My then-wife had given me a starter kit for Christmas '96 and I popped the cherry on it the following Jan. That starter kit fit in a medium-sized cardboard box. Since then, my brewery has grown to take up half of my basement and a good portion of my garage, not to mention the hops growing alongside the garage. I was given that kit on my oldest son's first Christmas. He is driving now. Ugh.
