    Default Are You Serious? IIPA

Ok, I might have gone off the deepend. This is actually right on the line of being a barleywine due to it's color, but I think the IBU's are a bit high for that style.

I'm brewing this over the weekend. Thoughts?

That's a serious brew. I'm not sure about the 164 IBUs. From a lot of what I've read, and something Mike McDole was saying on the brewing network, it seems like you can't get too much more than 100 IBUs into solution

I've heard that too, that's just what beersmith was saying. I wasn't shooting for a 100+ IBU number as much as I'm wanting some huge flavor/aroma additions and I do know for sure that the IBU's, whatever the max may be, will be maxed out.

I decided to pitch on a WLP005 British Ale yeast cake. I figure that will be a huge enough starter to handle this beer. It's from a porter, so it might darken it a bit, but I'm not too worried, this one is going to be dark red, almost brown already. Gonna need that blow off tube handy though!

Wow, that will be pretty dark for an IIPA, but the honey and Munich should lend an interesting taste.

As for the statement that you can't get much more than 100 IBU's into solution - I disagree. The last IIPA and IPA I did were 160 and 120 respectively and there was certainly a difference. The most recent IIPA I did (still in secondary) comes in at 306 IBU and there is *absolutely* a difference.

I've never used warrior, colombus or amarillo. I've only brewed 3 ipa/apa's though since I started 1 year ago. That's gonna change this year though, I"m gonna try and keep an IIPA on tap at all times.
