    Default What's in your cup?

a break out from the Damn that's good coffee thread....what's in your coffee cup this morning and what's it taste like?

Today I have Ethiopian Moplaco Yirga Cheffe from Sweet Maria's that's roasted to about FC+. Big sweet floral aromas and flavors with a really nice lemony citrus with honey sweetness thing going on.

Drinking a coffee made with that same bean right now! Home-roasted, of course.

Made mine Turkish style with a touch of cardamom in an ibrik. Yum.

That stuff is like liquid crack. I used to drink a pot of coffee from 8:30 am to around noon. 1 cup of that stuff made me bounce off of the walls. It's like SUPER caffeine or something.

I'm at the house today, so it's Coca Cola for breakfast.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe roasted on Friday morning to a Full City+.

    Roast Profile:

    300 F 5 min Warming & Drying

482 F 8.5 min to Rolling First Crack

464 F to end of roast at 18 min

Stopped roaster and crash cooled outside (20F ambient).

Very rich and full flavor with strong elements of cholcolate and dark fruit.

It is cocaine like. She don't lie. You only need one large mug of this shit. More than that and you risk cardiac arrest. Dem Ethiopians make good stuff. I only hope they wash their hands now and then.

If you guys keep on with the home coffee roasting posts my wife is going to be hunting all of you guys down. She thinks I'm obsessed enough with brewing without adding another hobby but it looks to me like it's almost inevitable...So what do you guys recommend as a beginning roaster?

One of the most inexpensive ways to dip your toes in the water. I occasionally find myself scoping the Behmor 1600 on ebay, but I've been incredibly happy with the results I've had so far with the most basic equipment.

Would a heatgun or air popper be better to start with?

Personally, I found the roast on an old air popper to be way too fast, so the flavor was mediocre at best. If you hook up the air popper to a long extension cord, you'll get a better roast. I prefer the heat gun because I have the greatest amount of control, IMO.

Before I received my Nesco roaster for xmas, I was planning to try my old Presto air-popper. (I've had it twenty years, it made HORRIBLE popcorn.) The extension cord idea is interesting...even better, I could have plugged it into my variac and dialed in the voltage I wanted. But now I'll never know, as the Presto is now property of Goodwill Industries.

This morning, I enjoyed some Sumatra Mandheling that I roasted last night.
