You're right. It doesn't really help this site grow and become more productive if we spend all our time trying to tear down the other sites.
When I came here, after my first couple posts of course, I felt a freedom here that I haven't felt on the other site. I was able to say some things that have been on my mind for a while. I think that's what a lot of people feel when they come here from over there. If more people from the other site make it over here, I'm sure we can expect the same kind of response at first. It just feels good to vent and get those thoughts out. I think I'm ready to move on though. You're WAYYYY too coherent while drunk. ![]() |

Agreed, Tankard. I did a shitload of bashing when I first started the site as well. Like I said earlier here or in another thread (can't remember), we are going to censor anyone.. but it will probably get moved to the Red Zone so people can easily avoid. And, this thread is good to let known that we would rather keep the bashing to a minimum.

Hmmmm. Nothing creates a better, stronger (and unfortunately more insular) society than a common enemy and a bit of nationalism. Our dislike for a common enemy binds us together as strong as our love for a comon good, if not more so.
Reminding ourselves on a regular basis of WHY we are hanging our here together is important, and like it or not, this place was founded by, and is densely populated by people who really like HBT, but either couldn't stand the BS anymore, or got banned. If HBC were a country, we would have and "Independence Day" celebration every year to celebrate our breaking free of the shackles of oppression we experienced elsewhere, and our glorious FREEDOM we experience in our new home. After my expulsion from HBT, I was pretty much fed up with looking and communicating online about brewing, and really was ready to start wasting my time elsewhere (like maybe in the shed actually brewing more instead of sitting on my arse and talking about it), but when I was pointed in this direction, I decided this was my new online brewing home. I feel that in respect to the feelings and attitudes that created this fantastic community, there needs to be a sticky thread that states what is wrong with "The Other Place", and all newcomers (especially from HBT) can read it and understand what sort of differences they will experiance here. Let's face it, there is going to be a steady stream of people coming here that want to bitch about their experience "Over There" and we want to make them feel welcome, and share that common ground with them. Or I could just get over it and move on... ![]()

DS, couldn't agree more with you. Pete makes a valid argument about our currently small community and who it's been comprised of...but bashing the other site all the time makes our site unattractive to everyone but the other site's castaways. Is that the kind of community we really want to be? We should be welcoming new brewers as well as "dual board" members that don't have issues with "the site that shan't be named."
If we only attract disgruntled and/or banned folks, we'll end up like Australia (j/k Pete)! Seriously though, Australia is just a bunch of criminals. :p Last edited by adrock; 09-09-2008 at 12:56 AM. Reason: Can't spell; also added smiley so everybody doesn't think I'm a dick. |

Pete makes a valid point. I started this place, not out of spite for HBT, but out of a desire to make beer trades with people that weren't paying members. That seriously pissed olllllo off because me and some guys I was building a recipe with (hobbit ale recipe) decided that we should trade once we all brew it. ollllllo stepped in and said only paying members could trade. So, I created this forum so we could discuss the trade outside of HBT. That was the first and probably the last straw as well with ollllllo... I was on his hate list. He was just waiting to find a reason to ban me after that because I was stepping on his authority in a round about way.
So, with all that said. I didn't start this place out of spite but out of a desire to get more from a brewing community. I don't want to scare away possible members by hating on HBT all the time, but again, in an attempt to not be like HBT, I won't hate on anyone for bashing them. But, I will personally be attending HBT bashing threads less often and they really should stick to the Red Zone since it is controversal and that's why I made the Red Zone when I initially setup HBC. But, again, Pete makes a good point and I will probably sticky what I just wrote in another thread so that people do not how we got started, who we are, and how we want to run a community NOT a business. I'll try not to sticky it in this forum because I don't want us to get bogged down with stickies. I might just link to it in DS's initial post in this thread.

Pete DOES make a good point. After all, if I was 100% happy with the other place, I wouldn't really need a reason to be here. I have been feeling a growing disconnect with that other site for months, and it wasn't until I came here that I realized how real that feeling was. I feel more comfortable here, in all honesty.
On the other hand, I do agree that the constant complaining about 'talk is something that will only attract those people who are getting fed up with that site. If someone who JUST got their Mr. Beer kit looks up homebrewing on the web, and finds a site full of people complaining non-stop about another brewing site, that person is not likely to stick around. We would want to foster a friendly, supportive, educational environment that will help people discover homebrewing if we hope to grow the site. |

Wow! I made a good point!
![]() OK, RED zone only for bitching about HBT.... so any newcomers have to go looking for it. Maybe a disclaimer at the very beginning to explain that we aren't about bashing other brewers or their place of worship, but that we share a common disagreement with the way HBT is governed. What's a "Mr. Beer"?
