Default Beer Wars

Anyone seen it? Me and the girl watched it last night and thought it was pretty good. I feel like it could have been better, maybe by looking into the beginnings of some other small breweries, but overall we both thought it was good. It really puts into perspective Miller, Coors, and especially A-B. I now loathe A-B for the shit they pull, especially with Dogfish Head, and I'm sure shit like that is very common between them and the small competition. It's incredible how much other beer A-B has taken over. It also puts Distributors into perspective, which is something that I have been looking into while researching starting a small microbrewery in my home town in the future.

Well, I got it how I get all my movies... because I'm a poor college student. However, if you want to buy it you can get it off the site. I don't know who else has it.

I went and saw it in the theater and thought along the same lines. it is a good movie, though i thought that the producer took a pretty strong stance focusing the brunt of her attacks at AB when it could have been spread around a little more. Insightful none the less, i would recomend it.

I watched this yesterday and I thought it was pretty bad on several levels. At the most basic level it did not present a cohesive message/story and failed to really drive home how awful the BMC companies are.

The segments about Rhonda Kallman's problems with trying to create her moonshot brand was less about ruthless BMC and more about how difficult it is to create a brand in an already mature market with a product that no one is demanding or even looking for. Trying to build a brand around a niche/fad beverage = no one wants to fund you or back you....go figure.

The film presents the POV that the only reason that BMC became popular is because of ruthless business practices, industrial production and massive marketing, implying that they have never actually provided a product that customers want; which isn't true. OTOH, you can certainly argue that they've maintained their market share/dominance with these practices. The brief segment on Monsanto in Food Inc was significantly more persuasive than the whole of beer wars.

On one hand Anat Baron lampoons the volume of legislation on beer distribution (even mentions she was on the phone with lawyers every day @ mikes) then moments later she criticizes the industry for having one of the most powerful and effective lobbying arms....never even attempting to draw a reasonable conclusion between the two. One of the most taxed and legislated industries has a powerful lobby? Shocking!

The Roger and Me part with Auggie IV was pretty pointless

I did like the segment on Green Valley Brewing and the mock craft brands.

What made this film entertaining was the segments with the craft brewers like Sam C, Carol Stoudt, Jim K and Greg K. Sam's struggle to meet demand, grow the brewery and retain the vision and ethics that motivated him to start the brewpub in the first place was the best part of the story.

Sam and the other brewers were the highlight of the movie. That moonshot chick was hopeless and sucked up WAY too much time in that film fumbling around trying to peddle her tacky beverage.

Otherwise it was ok. At least it helps to bring beer politics into discourse.
