Dark Lord Day 2010

Just got word that Three Floyds' Dark Lord Day 2010 will take place on Saturday, April 24th. I've never been and always heard that the place is a zoo on DLD. Still, I think I might try and make it this year. They are only ~25 mins. from the house.

Last years looked like a total goat fuck with all sorts of people getting the shaft and walking away empty handed all while bottles started hitting ebay. Later some kind folks over on BA shared their haul with the less fortunate. Now that's beer karma.

If you dont mind standing in a line literally a about a half mile long to get your beer, then cool. You also need to have tickets to even buy the beer, so you better get on that right away. I have a friend who goes every year. seems like a waste of time by listening to him, but for some reason he keeps going.

Last years was actually the most organized of the lot. They did the whole lotto ticket thing and if you had a ticket you were guarenteed some DL, so anyone who walked away empty handed showed up without a ticket praying for the slim chance that they might be able to pick up a bottle or two.

I had a couple buddies who went last year and they were nice enough to sell me a couple of bottles that they had. If you are serious about going, make sure to sign up early for the tickets (assuming they do it the same way) and show up early to avoid having to wait too long for your bottles.

The big mess last year was at the Pop Skull table because that was basically a free for all, from what my friends said the DL line was very organized.

You're right...'08 was the total goatfuck and '09 was the tickets. Course, people still bitch about the ebaying of tickets but what can you do....FFF can't control what people do with their bottles or tickets.

I recently got a chance to sample DL '08 and '09. Good stuff but I'm not sure it lived up to the hype. I also had the Alesmith Speedway Stout which I thought was the better of the three. 3Fs really have a good marketing gimmick with this beer. Not to say that it's not as good as advertised but even hardcore beer geeks can fall prey to clever marketing.

As of now, DL is my favorite beer. Nothing has come close. However, I haven't had the Alesmith Speedway Stout, which I have heard is better from other people. How the hell can I get a bottle of this? Is it a seasonal thing or what? I really want to get one from someone.

I hear it's more than just waiting in line to get a bottle. There are tons of people that bring commercial and homebrew from all over and are very generous about sharing. Sounds like a good time to me.

We're prob getting a road trip for DLD this year. We have 5 or 6 so far planning to go.

Wow. What an awesome clusterfuck. I cannot wait until next year. I wish I had got into the brewpub, or at least got to try the Vanilla Bean or Oak Aged Dark Lord on tap, but that line was crazy long and slow moving. At least I got 6 bottles. I tried soo many beers. We only got through the guest tap line once - we got Southern Tier Jah-Vah and Founders El Diablo Cask. Can't remember all the bottles of beer we had. Had Three Floyds Dreadnaught, Topless Wytch, and Rabbid Rabbit on tap - all were awesome. We forgot Munster was an hour behind, which was good, because we got there at 8am and it was already crazy crowded. Here are some pictures.
