Activity's actually up for a Sunday night. Tends to die down quite a bit Sat to Mon usually.

Well if you were referring specifically to the Mead section, there should be some content there now, I just went through the Wine section and moved a bunch of Mead specific threads into the Mead forum.

Yeah, it used to be a mead/wine/sake orgy, but I separated it into wine/sake, mead, and cider subforums. What I didn't do is take the time to move all the mead- or cider-related threads to where they belong, so all the old stuff is still in the wine/sake subforum. When I have some time, I'll go through it and do what I can.

All the mead ones are done. I wasn't sure of where to move some of the apple wine threads to, cause they could be considered cider threads, but I don't think of Apfelhooch as cider so I will leave it up to the wine masters on deciding where those threads go.

Totally. I kept thinking I was making that stuff wrong, then I realized that it really does just suck.

After seeing the 10,000 posts of praise from the other site, I made some about a year ago. It was terrible. I don't get it.

If you're talking about (Cr)apfelwein, I agree. I still have bottles left from the batch I made almost 2 years ago

OB, I've got a mead going. It's the first one and gonna be real dry. BUT, I'm all in for either a semi-sweet mead or Melomel.

Also, I'll gladly dispose of your Apfelwein. While it's not the greatest stuff on earth, it does score well in section B of the Salad Judging Format.

A) Drinkablitly
B) Drunkablilty

Yeah, like the ';)' makes it okay...

Srsly, what the hell is it with the prisonhoochfelwein? It amazes me, to this day, how anyone looking to make prison hooch (you know, ferment something that's really alcoholic and easy to make) gets browbeaten to death over there, but everyone and their mom is a disciple of the church of the apfelwein...which is just store-bought apple juice that is spiked with a ton of dextrose, which serves no other purpose than you raise the alcohol level. It's no different than the 'makingitgood'-esque hooch. Not saying it tastes bad, it's just not really the elixir of the gods that so many people make it out to be.

It's that whole mob mentality thing...enough people sing its praises, then new people want to make it and feel like they HAVE to like it or they are the outsider. Then all their internet friends won't like them anymore.

I see what you're saying though. They will threaten to close a thread if someone mentions fermenting plain sugar water, even though there is no distilling involved.

Evan!, was your post directed at me or just a general post about the HBT? I'm not quite sure how to read that sucka. Then, I can respond accordingly.

I was directing it at the HBT Church of Apfelwein folks, not you. I don't begrudge anyone for making prisonhoochfelwein...I did a couple batches a long time ago, and yeah, it was good for a buzz, but I just didn't see the allure. That's all matter of opinion, though. The real issue is the hypocrisy of the "prison hooch is teh evil, but apfelwein is elixir of the gods" sentiment.

Gotcha. I guess we did read each others posts correctly and responded accordingly.

I have a problem of not expressing my opinions correctly almost as much as I misunderstand others posts.

You also have a problem of expressing yourself at exactly the wrong moment, saying the exact wrong thing! :D :k2:

I been in the right place
But it must have been the wrong time
I'd of said the right thing
But I must have used the wrong line
I been in the right trip
But I must have used the wrong car
My head was in a bad place
And I'm wondering what it's good for

I make a batch of the apfelwein every now and then. I'll only do it when it has been a while between batches and I prefer to have something homemade on tap.

It doesn't really live up to the advertising though, does it. People politely tell me they like it, but even when I host parties it doesn't exactly fly out of the tap leaving me with an empty keg. I even brought a half full keg over to a huge Christmas party last year and everyone was getting wasted. I brought home a quarter keg full of apfelwein. I think of it as a placeholder and nothing more.

I'm not a fan of the stuff. The problem is that the GF is. So, I keep making the shit so I get less bitching about making real beer.

I once read a quote in a magazine once, don't remember the brewer or the brewery, but went something like this:

Customer (to Brewer): why do you brew this plain old blonde ale, it lacks character and life.
Brewer: I brew that blonde ale so that I can brew my Barley Wine.

Moral is, sometimes you have to suck it up and brew the beers you are less happy with, so you can afford to brew the ones you love.

This came out of a BYO and I will try to dig up the issue when I get home so I can better quote it.
