Hey guys!

I finally did it. I brewed my first AG batch. It was an oatmeal stout and it went... well... not so bad.

Grains crush: Went A1 but I suspected that the crush was too tight. But again, it was my first AG so, I know nothing about crushing grains. : O) What should be the perfect gap for a 2 roll crusher?

Mash: Went pretty well too. I hit 1 deg under my temp so, it's not that bad. Lost like 4 deg in 1 hour so I'll have to improve/change my mash tun. I had no problem with the first running.

Sparge: I heated the water to about 78C and began sparging. And then... stuck sparge I guess... nothing is coming out of the tun anymore. My gettho false bottom got stuck or something like that. I had to dump all the grain/water mix in buckets, rinse the false bottom, put it back in the mash tun and get that going once again. Hooray!!!

After that, everything went well. Had a hard time with my cfc. I didn't know how much water I had to shoot in the chiller to obtain perfect temp so I had to go and change the flow like 30 times to acheive perfect temperature.

In beersmith, the estimated OG was 1.061 and, with the same recipe in beertools, the OG was 1.054. I was supposed to have 43L of beer but ended up with a little less and with an OG of 1.054.

I also did a starter for the first time and was not sure if it had worked. But, I pitched it in the beer and yesterday (I brewed on sunday), the fermenter was bubbling like crazy!

So, that's about it. I didn't think of taking pictures of the process cuz I always felt like I had something to do. But, next time, I'll try to "immortalize" the brew day on photos!

Can't wait to taste that brew.

Cheers and sorry about the long post!

That's the fun of a new system and a new process....you have to go through the process on the system to really work the bugs out and see what you need to do differently as you go forward. On the brightside, all this process improvement results in beer :)
