Today is back to normal. Wife and kid are back which is actually a good thing because I cant even imagine what my existence would look like without the invisible restraining device that I call family.

On to the brews... did two batches this weeken. Both partial mashes. First up was O'Flans stout. Everything went well but overshot OG. My big question is on my second brew. WHich was intended to be a special bitter. The recipe I used had a calculated OG of 1049. Either I cant read a hydrometer or there is seriously something fucked with my process. I read my OG at 1080!!! Is this even possible with the grain bill listed below?

Belgian Aromatic 0.50 lb
Crystal 120 0.50 lb
Maris Otter 3.75 lb
Special Roast 0.25 lb

Well, I guess the first question is what was the temp of the wort?

Did you adjust for that?

Even with that I wouldnt think that you would have been 30 points higher on your OG.

Wort was 68f.

Something doesn't add up with those numbers, using Beersmith, I am getting an OG of 1.051 with the PM efficiency set at 75%. Even setting it to 100% it only comes out at 1.060.

What did your final volume end up at? Did you boil off too much? Did you do a full boil or did you add water to the fermenter? if you didn't mix up the top up water well enough that can throw off your readings.

Was this a full boil or top off? If you topped off, you prb didn't get a thoroughly mixed sample. If full boil, have you verified the accuracy of your hydro?

Ended up w/ 3.25 gallons after the boil. Topped off to 5 and gave the bucket a few shakes. It is entirely possible that I didnt mix well enough.

I'm saying mixing. You got a sample that had more DME in it.

Usually the mixing issue results in a low OG.
Any possibility the hydro sample was taken before topping off?
