I'll link to the thread at TBH so I don't have to re-post all the original pics. I started working on this again this week since I think that I have my water problem taken care of after dropping a bunch of money on a super-duper industrial grade sump pump and even more money on a gas generator to keep things running in case the power drops.

Right now I'm working on painting the ceiling black. I taped off all the ductwork to give it a restaurant/bar type of feel. I'm only working on the non-homebrewpub half right now (poker room, exercise room and bathroom) as building the bar is going to cost me a fortune in wood and stain.

Son of a bitch. I went to pull pics off of the camera and I can't find the damn thing. My wife stashed it somewhere around here. New pics will follow. In the meantime, here's the link to the thread on TBH:

Looking good. I'm confused about your allegiances to the Lions and THE Ohio State University. I would think that those two are incompatible.

I know quite a few Univ of Michigan guys and any mention of the state of Ohio sends them into fits.

No pics showing any changes yet. I just started working on it again. I'll try to get some pics posted of the ceiling after I finish it this weekend. It's a real pain in the ass spraying osb.

Mild update. I'm about 60% or so done spraying the ceiling on the half that we're finishing now. I'll finish up the painting tomorrow (Sunday), then it's on to acid staining the floors. The paper you see is the ductwork that's taped off with newspaper to prevent it from betting sprayed black.

This section all has a second coat, but there are some spots that still need touched up.

From the exercise room to the poker room:
http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z290/ohiobrewtus/basement3-14-09001.jpg

Fro the homebrewpub looking into the poker room (I double checked after the pic and I didn't miss that spot by the light, the combination of the light and the flash makes a section of the osb look like it hasn't been painted, but it is):

ohiobrewtus
03-15-2009, 10:59 PM
I did paint the pvc, but I taped off the brass and the aluminum ductwork so that they would be exposed. I could have painted everything, but I thought that it would look cool leaving all of the metal exposed against the black paint.

The camera flash exaggerates some highlights in the paint on the wood. It actually looks very even to the human eye. I'm very happy with how it turned out.

I've pretty much ditched the french doors idea. It will look sweet from the outside, but once I have the pub side finished those doors are going to be a pain in the ass when they're open... one right in front of the karoake stage and the other right against the pop-a-shot.

I may still decide to keep the doors, but for now I'm thinking of just leaving the opening and trimming it out.

My wife not only supports me in getting this done... everytime I have a couple free hours she asks me if I'm working on the basement. She wants to see it done more than I do.

She's hoping that the room will be (mostly) done by 4/25 when we have a poker game at the house. I told her she's nuts. MAYBE I could get it done that soon if I had 2 or 3 weeknights and weekends to work on it, but now my kids have softball practice 4 nights a week. I'll be happy with having it done by about 6/1.

Regardless, I'll continue to post progress pics along the way.

This appears to be ramping up again. There may actually be some updates in a couple of weeks. I'm giving up some space, but in order to get it done I think it will be worth it.

We're thinking about moving the poker room over to the bar area, losing one of the pub booths and moving them up by the wall to wall bar. The poker room would then become a media room of sorts - add a gas fireplace, etc.

MrMarbleHead
11-11-2009, 03:33 PM
Nice, that will still be cool. And it will give that feel of being in a backroom poker game when you are playing. Plus having the media room will be awesome, are we talking projector, theater surround sound, and lazy boys or what?

It's all about how you pitch it to her. You need to do so in a way that makes it sound like it was her idea. "Oh, honey it would be so nice to have a place to sit and enjoy the company when your sisters come to visit....blah blah blah"

OB is lucky enough that his wife is all about the poker tourney's as well.

The plan is projector, theater seating (the sofa-esque variety) and surround. Otherwise I wouldn't have agreed to give up any space.

Although since I brought up the fact that the stripper pole wouldn't have a home with this configuration, my wife is furiously trying to figure out where we can still fit one in... you know - for when you get drunk at Beerfest next year. :D

Very nice work. I have a black ceiling too - it's great. How was the acid etch floor to put down? I thought about doing that in mine, but the wife wanted to go carpet in most of it.

ohiobrewtus

The acid staining was very easy, actually. The hardest part is waiting in between steps and the strong odor of the sealer when it's being put down.

I spent a few hours over the weekend cleaning up and moving shit around in an effort to figure out if I was going to have enough space to do everything that I want to do, and here are the results (there's still shit in the way though).

As you can tell compared to the previous pics, I'm giving up quite a bit of space for a media room, but it all fit comfortably.

There will be a knee wall separating the booths from the poker area, I had to ditch one of the booths, and move back into the brew room about 1.5 feet in order to get a 3' isle way into the pub. I don't really want to do these things, but the possibility of a projector and a 96" HD picture can be enough to change a guy's mind. :D

WOP, I'm uploading these pics just for you - doucheface.

That seems to all fit pretty well - although it might be crowded when you have enough people down there to fill all of those seats.

That's what I thought too, which is the reason that I went ahead and set everything up. There's actually just as much room for 20 people as there was on the other side. I setup all the chairs and sat at them because I was concerned with it.

MrMarbleHead
11-17-2009, 04:11 PM
Haha, thanks man. It looks good, but where are you going ot put the stage and stripper pole? The poker tables are colapsable aren't they? You use them a lot but you could move them out of the way when not in use. Also what did you do with the other booth?

MrMarbleHead
11-17-2009, 04:12 PM
That's what I thought too, which is the reason that I went ahead and set everything up. There's actually just as much room for 20 people as there was on the other side. I setup all the chairs and sat at them because I was concerned with it.

Ha, I can see you walking around the room sitting in every chair, and making sure that there is enough elbow room and cup holder space for everyone!

ohiobrewtus
11-17-2009, 04:20 PM
No room for the stage anymore, so that kills the stripper pole too.

The poker tables are a solid top that sits on a folding table, so yes, I can lean them up against a wall or move them into the brew room or something if I need to use that space for something else.

I'm going to have to rebuild the booths because they're not all that sturdy. Since I'm only using 2 I'll probably just pitch the other section. It's not an entire booth though. To make 3 booths there are 2 end sections and 2 middle sections. One of the middle sections gets you this: _||_ instead of this: |_ _|.

ohiobrewtus
11-17-2009, 04:21 PM
Ha, I can see you walking around the room sitting in every chair, and making sure that there is enough elbow room and cup holder space for everyone!

I did exactly that. :D Of course I had to sit at each seat and make sure that there was proper room to drink beer.

Then I had to sit in all the booths to perform these critical tests as well.

Fuck me in the goat ass...

I did the framing for the basement bar right after we moved in here - before I even started brewing. I was back there redoing some wiring, had to pull a couple of outlets out, etc. So I got to thinking that I should measure the opening where the freezer that cools the whole thing will go.

Of course it's not big enough, so I'll be tearing the entire bar down and rebuilding it.

I am remodeling the bathroom (actually rebuilding it, the previous owners left it in sad neglect) in our 'guest house'. I gutted the whole thing and bought the materials in one shot so I'd only pay for one delivery charge. One small detail I didn't check. I bought a shower stall thinking I had 32" wide door openings, wrong. So I had to pop two of the outside frame wall studs out, pull the shower stall in and then cut the opening into the main area wider. It sucked but at least I had a work around early on. So I feel your pain!

Yup. Well, everything except the plumbing. That's one of the few areas of home construction that I've never done. Fortunately, one of the guys that plays in our poker league owns a plumbibg/HVAC business here in town and he's going to come over and help/teach me how to do it all.

Seriously it's not too bad. I was a plumber for about 2 years. Knees couldn't take it though.

If you're running any length of supply, seriously consider looking into PEX. You can interface it with Copper via adapters and it's ridiculously easy to work with. A day's worth of PEX work is equivalent to several days of Copper unless you're really skilled at working with Copper.

ohiobrewtus
12-03-2009, 01:20 PM
I've worked with PEX before in a different house that I built and it was pretty easy, but a bit expensive (at least it was 9 years ago). The copper runs will be minimal, none of them are over 15 running feet.

zoebisch01
12-03-2009, 05:55 PM
It's cheap now, waaay cheaper than copper. I did our house with it, the manifold rocks. I have shutoffs centrally located for everything in the house. If something needs to be fixed, I just shut off its supply and it doesn't interfere with anything else. But it sounds like you'll be good with copper for that project.

That's what I did with mine. Take a look. (http://www.homebrewchatter.com/board/f59/upgrading-my-kegerator-t7875/) I used black primer, then some silver metal spray paint (http://www.krylon.com/products/premium_metallic/), which gave it a brushed, not shiny, metal look. I then shot it with some clear coat.

One word of caution if you use the metallic paint I linked: make sure and give yourself a lot of time between the metal coat and the clear coat and let both coats dry completely. I'd advise giving it a week or two. I did mine in our garage in early summer. Low humidity, temps in the mid 70s... perfect conditions, right? After a couple of days, the silver metallic paint would come off on my hands and I was leaving faint finger prints on the tap tower. I had to shoot it all over again.

I'm still not 100% satisfied with the finish. I'm seriously considering finishing the whole thing in silver leaf. More expensive than paint, but not as much as a genuine draft tower.

Okay, but that's gonna be a little unsightly. Srsly, though, that's what base trim is for!

WOP's right. I have 9' ceilings in the basement (actually about 8' 9"), but I'm running 2 sheets of drywall and leaving the bottom so I can stain the floor. Once the floor is done I'll come back on the bottom section with greenboard. It doesn't really have much to do with trim. I'd need to put drywall under the trim anyway.

I'm rebuilding the booths, so the parts where the colors don't match won't be an issue when the final installation is done.

Sure - I have this pic of the jig I used to cut the angles - that might help more than anything. I got this rail from Rockler. You should have a 5/8 base for the front lip to rest on. It's 1.5 inches to the bottom of the lip. You're supposed to use 1 piece of 3/4 on top of that and then fill in the remaining 3/4 with whatever your counter is going to be.

I'm not great at cutting angles either. I cut this one several times and made a bunch of corrections. It ended up dead on, but it took a while.

Thanks! I found some at Menard's that has a different profile than that, and I think it may even be a bit wider, but the concept remains the same. I may be hitting you up here in a few weeks when I get ready to tackle the bar top.

For right now I just needed to get some of this wood in stalled and out of my way. I still have to build the cooling chamber, display shelves and finish out the bathroom before I get to the countertops.

Can't hurt to price it out. Especially if the copper happened to fall off the back of a truck.

I don't have the oil painting, but I do have several of the limited-edition velvet rugs left in stock. Thomas Kinkade (http://www.somethingawful.com/d/photoshop-phriday/paintings-light-ii.php) was commissioned to do the work. For only 6 easy payments of $79.95, it can be yours today. Everybody loves the Painter of Light!

Damn I haven't been over there for a while. My favorite thing on there was the Richard Scary stuff (http://www.somethingawful.com/d/photoshop-phriday/grownup-world-richard.php).

Wow. Kinkade's a crazy religious wacko. Woulda thunk?

Kinkade's company, Media Arts Group Inc., has been accused of unfair dealings with owners of Thomas Kinkade Signature Gallery franchises. In 2006, an arbitration board awarded Karen Hazlewood and Jeffrey Spinello $860,000 in damages and $1.2 million in fees and expenses due to Kinkade's company "[failing] to disclose material information" that would have discouraged them from investing in the gallery.[13][14] [15] The plaintiffs and other former gallery owners have also leveled accusations of being pressured to open additional galleries that were not financially viable, being forced to take on expensive, unsalable inventory, and being undercut by discount outlets whose prices they were not allowed to match.

Kinkade has denied the accusations and Media Arts Group has successfully defended itself in previous suits by other former gallery owners. Kinkade himself was not singled out in the finding of fraud by the arbitration board.[14]

In August 2006, the Los Angeles Times reported that the FBI was investigating these issues, with agents from offices across the country conducting interviews.[16]

Former gallery dealers also charge that Kinkade uses Christianity as a tool to take advantage of people. "They really knew how to bait the hook," said one ex-dealer who spoke on condition of anonymity. "They certainly used the Christian hook."[17] One former dealer's lawyer stated "Most of my clients got involved with Kinkade because it was presented as a religious opportunity. Being defrauded is awful enough, but doing it in the name of God is really despicable."[18]

...

The Los Angeles Times has reported that some of Kinkade's former colleagues, employees, and even collectors of his work say that he has a long history of cursing and heckling other artists and performers. The Times further reported that he openly groped a woman's breasts at a South Bend, Indiana, sales event, and mentioned his proclivity for ritual territory marking through urination, once relieving himself on a Winnie the Pooh figure at a Disney site while saying "This one’s for you, Walt."[21][22] Kinkade has denied some of the allegations, and accepted and apologized for others.[22]

In 2006 John Dandois, Media Arts Group executive, recounted a story that on one occasion ("about six years ago") Kinkade became drunk at a Siegfried & Roy magic show in Las Vegas and began shouting "Codpiece! Codpiece!" at the performers. Eventually he was calmed by his mother.[21] Dandois also said of Kinkade, "Thom would be fine, he would be drinking, and then all of a sudden, you couldn't tell where the boundary was, and then he became very incoherent, and he would start cussing and doing a lot of weird stuff."[21]

I used FRP adhesive and slapped it right on the wall. I was told to not use a standard glue, as it will eventually bleed through the material.

Yes, I'm doing the work myself. I have a couple friends coming over Sunday to help me out with them. I'm not *too* worried about the finish work since I'm putting a clear epoxy over them that should hide my poor finishing skills.

Are you planning on fermenting in there as well, or just cold-aging/lagering? With my ragtag setup, I've found that when fermenting lagers in the same place as where your serving kegs reside, it kind of sucks because for that week or two, your kegs are about 10 degrees warmer than they usually are.

I thought of that and sine I really don't have any other options (hell, I CAN'T lager now), I'll just have to deal with it.

I'll probably always try to do 2 at a time, leave 'em in there to ferment, pull them out for a d-rest and then crank the temp back down. It'll be a bit inconvenient, but manageable.

The big white thing that you see is the lid of the 35+ cu. ft. cooling chamber that will eventually be painted w/stainless metallic paint.

I just thought of a new name for the place:

The Periwinkle Pub

Fuck yeah.

BTW, the pics do not do the theater screen anywhere near the justice it deserves. That fucker is gargantuan.

Goddam, I keep forgetting to upload all my pics. Not sure where to put 7 gigs to share though, anyone know a good file sharing spot for files that large? I can zip it all up to maybe 6 gigs or something.

Damn OB, that place looks like a freaking sports bar, very impressive. I must say, my favorite thing is the Barry Sanders jersey. Awesome build.

Please don't waste that beautiful TV entirely on crappy Wii graphics and Disney Princess movies. 'Twould be a shame.

↑↑↑What the slow kid said.↑↑↑

I was skeptical about the picture quality of a projection screen, but you were right, it's tight. What I wouldn't give to play Uncharted 2 on that fucker in 1080p.
