Soon, I will be brewing my last (hopefully) extract brew (chocolate porter) with my dad. I will have my annual bonus from work soon, and I've decided to use part of it to get into AG brewing. I've got the burner, cooler to make into a mash tun, a 10g kettle and a wort chiller lined up for purchase.
Anyone have any ideas of a good brew to do as a first all grain? :)

A Stout worked good for me :):) Hid all my Eff ups!
5 Gal batches? What types of beer do you like to drink? I would brew something I knew I was going to drink.

Yeah, I'll be doing 5 gallon batches. The problem is I love just about all types of beer. I was thinking maybe a Scottish Ale of some sorts..

Start with a pale ale and make it until you've got it down pat. If you make *any* mistakes they'll show up and you'll learn how to fix them.
After you've mastered the pale ale, you can pretty much make anything without worrying about it.
Just go real easy with the peat if you make the Scottish beer, unless you have something particular in mind that you like and know the recipe for. I think we discussed this before, but if not, that's my advice...
The Scottish beer I brewed had only 3 oz of peated malt, and it's one beer I will never brew again. Just thinking about it curls my taste buds, ugh. Have fun with the first AG.:)

I did a really simple ESB w/ a straightforward grain and hop bill for my first AG. It definitely pointed out some issues in my process, which I was able to correct for future batches. I way over sparged w/ 180 degree water and pulled some harsh tannins from the grain. The whole idea was to do a recipe that would not cover up any possible major defects.

karmabrew,
Just noticed you are in Stephens City. I used to live in Winchester, and still get down there from time to time. Perhaps we could meet up for a brew day sometime.
As I recall, there was a supply shop on the walking mall in Winchester.

I am now in the process of getting all of my equipment for my first AG brew. I came across this recipe for an American Pale Ale. How does this recipe look for a first AG brew?

Oh yeah? That's cool man. Yeah it's called Murphy's Beverage. I've talked to the guy before and he order's his limited supplies from Midwest and then marks it up. That would be cool if we could meet up for a brew day sometime. While you lived in Winchester, did you know of any homebrew clubs? I'm having a devil of a time trying to find one without going to Northern VA.

Recipe looks good.
If you haven't bought everything yet I suggest adding maybe another half oz of amarillo to the 1 min addition along with the cascade.

That sounds good. I haven't bought any of these ingredients yet. My Dad and I are going to brew an extract chocolate porter next. He wants to see the extract process in action.
