Recipe Type: Extract (though I am working on a PM version as well)
Yeast: WLP005 british ale
Batch size: 5 gal
Estimated OG: 1.045
Estimated FG:1.012
IBU: 24.2
Color: 17.4 SRM
Boil time: 60

Ingredients:

2.00 lb Light Dry Extract
2.50 lb Light Dry Extract [Boil for 15 min]
0.50 lb Pilsner Liquid Extract [Boil for 15 min]
1.25 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 20L
0.50 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L
0.25 lb Chocolate Malt
1.25 oz Fuggles [4.50 %] (60 min)
0.50 oz Goldings, East Kent [5.00 %] (15 min)

notes:

Steep the crystal and chocolate for 20-30 mins at 150-170. If you want you can replace the pilsner extract and steep some carapils along with the grain. This is a very preliminary recipe that will probably be modified over time. I just did this one a couple days ago, and haven't made the recipe before. So I can't really tell how it is going to turn out yet, but there will be an update when i finally get to taste it. Just follow the 1-2-3 rule for your fermentation.

I don't think firepunks been around in a while. May be worth sending him a PM to get a response.

Does this look like a pretty solid recipe for a new castle clone?

Looks like it'd make a nice, easy drinking English brown. Couldn't give a good answer how close to Newcastle it would be exactly though.

A little bit of Victory, around 4-5% in a 5 gallon recipe, really makes a Northern English Brown damn good. Everything else looks good.

So I could add 0.5lbs of victory as well, or use less?

Yeah, 0.5 lbs is a good starting point, I think.

So the home brew store I am going to does not have crystal 20L and 60L, but they do have 10L and 80L, could I make this substitution without changing much?

that seems like they should balance each other to be very similar

Would it change much about the beer if I subbed the 0.5lbof pilsen liquid malt extract for 0.5lb light dme? I don't want to buy a 3.3lb can of pilsen to only use 0.5lb's of it.

I don't think it'd be too big of a deal
