Got tired of trying to stir my mash with that flimsy plastic spoon, so I made this over the weekend...

The wood is curly maple...beautiful stuff, probably too pretty for a mash paddle, but it was the only maple I had laying around---and maple is what I needed because of its density (I'm not putting a finish on it). I sanded it down to 600 grit, wiped it with a damp cloth to bring out the grain, then brought it back to 600 again.

I made one with a piece of pressed oak. Nothing I read would leave me to believe there's any health risk, so I'm good with it. I love the thought of making my own.

That's sweet! I need to do the same. These last few batches I was thinking how much easier breaking up those doughballs could be if I would just get a new paddle.

My little plastic mash paddle works for now, but I do want to get a nice one in the near future.

I got a piece of walnut at home that i am going to make into a paddle as soon as i find the time to. I made one out of walnut before but it is just a decrative trophy for the winner of the 24 hour brewday that my club does.

Use a yard stick...not the most effective.
