I am pretty sure that it is not a conical for beer, just doesn't look right to me. But thought the story was pretty funny.

Thats a wierd looking conical, what is the deal with the ledge around the top of the cone?

It is prolly a jacketed conical so they can control ferm temp. That would be where the glycol lines would run IMHO

Yeah that is what i was thinking too, wish I had one of those. Glycol chilled fermenter, now that would be TITS!

I dont think its too hard to build a small scale system for glycol chilling fermenter. I would look at bar supply houses that may have a chiller that is used for tap lines as a start.

They are really easy to make, just the chiller with pump is kind of pricey.

I got a buddy with a glycol unit, he got it cheap and is 90% sure that it works. It came with a big lot of stuff he bought. I keep trying to get him to set it up but he doesn't have any thing to cool with it yet. Plus he needs some glycol and a storage vessel for it.

So what the hell is glycol? I just tried to wiki it and it just gave me some chemical. What is it's use? How does it function?

It is an alchohol used for cooling....It is a more pure form of Ethylene Glycol

" any of a class of organic compounds belonging to the alcohol family; in the molecule of a glycol, two hydroxyl (OH) groups are attached to different carbon atoms. The term is often applied to the simplest member of the class, ethylene glycol."
