I just made up a batch of Baltic Porter with Saflager S-2. It is really slow in getting going. I pitched the yeast about 20 hours ago and while there is lots of foam, the fermentation lock is dead. Does this stuff just take a while to get going? Thanks for any/all help.

I don't know much about this yeast, but you might want to check to make sure your fermenter is sealed completely and there are no ways air can escape except through the airlock. Most likely though, it's just taking a little while to get a good start.

is this Saflager S-23?

I have used Saflager W-34/70 which is just a dry lager yeast and it takes a long time to start like at least to days. I pitched it on a Oktoberfest with a starting gravity of 1.055 and I used 2 packets. From what I have read their is not a big issue with the lag because most bacteria and other stuff that spoils the beer will not grow at 40-50 degrees.
