I have my collar completely painted. Last night I went to attach it, I drilled some holes, began to screw in the screws and the wood shifted positions and wasn't flush anymore. I remove the screws, stripping some out in the process, and drill more holes. Again, the wood would not stay flush. I have to line up the holes exactly straight other wise the screws go in crooked and twist the wood. My previous collar failed because I tried to use liquid nails to connect the boards and they came out uneven.

I guess what I need to do now is get a bigger drill bit, redrill the holes, and use bigger screws. Any suggestions on how to not screw this up?

Get a buddy to help you out. Seriously.

Unless you can get ahold of a really big frame square (used for making picture frames) but finding one that big would be hard.

I would sugest using some construction adheisive (other than gorrila glue, expands as it dries) and clamp it if you can, untill it dries, then drill it. you have it sitting on the ground right?

Best bet would be to use a nail gun (of the brad nailer variety) you could tack it in place and then screw, that is what i would do, but i have a brad nailer. if you can get ahold of one you should.

That's a great idea. I'll go to the Depot tonight and see what they have in the way of nail guns. Thanks!
