View Full Version : How to clean and dry plastic tubing?

After I use any sort of plastic tubing during racking and brew day I immediately flush with hot water, then treat it to a hot oxy-clean bath. After this, I rinse with fresh water to remove the oxy-clean scum as best I can and hang up the tubing on a rack to dry. Everything then gets the Star-San bath first thing on brew-day (or when I need to transfer/bottle).

However, last week before brew-day I noticed a bunch of mold in one of my lines. Luckily, this was just a hose line that doesn't come into contact with any wort, so it wasn't that big of a deal. It will still be replaced, but now I'm just worried about this happening to some of the tubing that comes into contact with the wort, especially during chilling.

What's the most tried and true method of avoiding mold/scum in the tubing?

I'm guessing you have a pump? Because after I drain into my kettle, I do not have any other tubing come in contact with the beer cept for the IC.

Starsan soak before use
Hot water flush after use
Starsan dip
Hang vertical to dry

I just usually flush with hot water and star san before I use again... never noticed mold though, that might change my methods if I did.

I hang tubing over a door jam until it is completely dry.

Hot water flush after use, star-san rinse before.
It may look stupid, but I give them a spin to dry them using centrifugal force, then store them coiled.

I stand in the front yard and spin them around, over my head and pretend like i am a helicopter trying to take off. My neighbors look at me funny but when i start making helicopter sounds and "Fly" off back into my garage they usually leave me alone.

I prefer the side-spin, I pretend I'm Roger Daltry.

Hey, I never thought of spinning, I usually just tie the blinds cord in the kitchen around them and let them hang until my wife says "how long are these f***ing things gonna hang here?!"

roflcopter... that made me laugh...i just toss used siphon/hoses either back in the sanitizer bucket or into a tub that i fill with soapy chiller waste water, quick rinse with the hose and hang up.
