So while drinking a Jones Soda Cream Soda today I couldn't help but think how delicious a vanilla cream soda type beer would be. Did some searching and couldn't find anything, has anyone seen or thought of making a beer like this?

A guy my friend knows made malt soda. He brewed a 100% marris beer, no hops, lager yeast, kegged and lagered for 5 months. They say it was amazing.

A (http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/caramel-cream-ale-2435/)nderson Valley Summer Solstice has a pretty substantial vanilla flavor with lots of caramel sweetness too....can't say it's something that I'd want a full batch of.

That link almost made me regret brewing. Ghhaah. One of the earliest beers I ever made. Took almost a year to choke it down.

Haha well can't say im too motivated to try to make it then. Any changes that could be made to improve it?

Was this just too sweet, or too much flavor added or what held it back from being good?

Bump. Any input would be greatly appreciated, as it could save me some wasted experimental batches

sometimes you have to do these things yourself to understand why not to do these things in the first place.

Fair enough, there just seemed to be a general consensus of an issue with the recipe by those who have made it, was just hoping to get their feedback on why they didn't like it.

I think there's a couple things with the recipe (this being said, I have NOT brewed it). The first is that it probably has too much vanilla for most people - so you may want to scale back in that regard. This, coupled with the already "sweet" nature of the 1 pound C-60 in an otherwise light grain bill is probably more than you would expect. Also, I think too many people maygo into it with the idea that it being a "Cream Ale" that it will be something to have 3-4 of in a sitting, when that's just not going to be the case. If you are looking more for a dessert beer, the recipe as written might be fine.
The last is that it seems to be a bunch of brewers' (well, at least back in the day) first beer, so while some may say they didn't like it, there were probably other issues at play as well (fermentation-type issues).

It seems like we all (myself included) have these ideas to do off the wall beers very early in our brewing days. Keep to the basic, tried-and-true recipes until you get a real understanding of what grains taste like what. I've done 39 batxhes and I'm still figuring out what grains go best with which others.
I made a few experimentals in the first 15 that were fun, but nearly undrinkable.

Thanks for taking the time to explain guys. I guess im just overzealous. Ill take a step back and stick to basics.
