We knew it was coming, but Wyeast has just announced a price increase starting January 1st 2012.

SO, buy your yeast before the end of the year.

I am using WL mostly now but I suppose they will use this opportunity to follow suit.

Probably more.

I'd guess that they'll be in the $10-$12 range. Jerks.

As soon as you told me about Notty going up, I figured that WY and WL would follow suit.

Typically your mom IS my xmas present, but hey, I'll lay off the sweetness if you got some lab equipment for me.

Most of the beers I brew are from 9 months to 1 year and a half year old yeast packs that didn't sell. Remember, it only takes one cell to reproduce/propogate.

So what's the price increase roughly going to be? Announcing an increase is one thing but what's the amount?

Slants are the way to go. But don't bother buying the equipment from a brewing place, it marked way the hell up.
I got most of my stuff from a ebay and that was a pretty cheap way to go.

Now the investment is like half an hour or so of my time and 1/2 to 1 pounds of DME to have enough yeast for a five gallon batch.

Why shouldn't the yeast be more than the grain bill and hops? I guess the old lady will need to cut some more hair.

Gonna have to start a yeast bank. Should be more beneficial than the sperm bank I started a couple years back.

You don't know how difficult it was to clean out the used condoms.

I'm getting ready to start washing my yeast anyway. Just sounds like they are going to force more HBers into doing that.

Is there anything wrong with taking one pack of yeast, making a big yeast starter, and splitting it between a bunch of small mason jars, essentially having a bunch of "packs" of yeast? I've been meaning to do this for a long time but never get around to it. I guess I mean will it last very long that way? Stuck in the fridge after they ferment of course.

OD why are you even questioning this? You already know its fine, and you have thought out how to do it, I can tell by the question.

The only reason I wont do the same is the time it takes to do it. That said I will be re-directing some of my time to yeast building since yeast is gonna be more than the entire grist and hop bill. Fuckers.

Yea I just don't know how long it will last. I guess it's no different than a bottled beer, may just have to step it up more than normal after a long time.

agreed, if you use the mr malty guide with the viability calculator youll be golden. if used within 4 weeks, its a super idea. In 3 months you will have to do starters, just like a smack pack or vial.
In the first 3 weeks i would prob just dump it right into wort, no starter, just like re-using unwashed cake from a mason jar.
