I cant seem to find any solid numbers of how much space grain takes up in the MLT.

I am just curious because I would like to know before hand how much room I have to dump water in... anyone got any ideas how much volume the grain actually is?
(sorry thats bad english but I am a product of a bad instant messaging childhood)

the only thing I know for sure is grain absorbs .1 to .2 gallons per pound so roughly 1 gallon of water per 10 lbs.
and that when I partial mashed 4lbs of grain filled my 2gallon cooler almost to the brim so 10 gallons would fill aprox. 5 gallons worth of cooler space...

sound right?

Here is a couple of calculators:

The "can I Mash It" Clac is really handy because it takes into account grain absorption rates.

looks like 10lbs of grain at 1.5qts per lb would take up 4.55 gallons of space in your cooler.
