Here's the skinny:

1. a box of 3-4 beers is created and sent from participant to participant
2. the tourbox can have homebrew and commercial beer
3. get something in the box you know you won't/don't like? beer it forward, no hard feelings
4. you have to re-package and send the box in the same week or very soon after
5. if you lose the box or it gets dinged in shipping, you make a new tourbox and resend
6. must be of legal age in your place of residence, ect, ect
7. other items can be tossed into the tourbox but nothing illegal/alive/decomposing/ect (use common sense)
8. After you get the box, take out your brews..refridge, sample, review and post in a tourbox thread

The Tourbox arrived at my apartment this morning as I was heading out to work.

I couldn't resist opening it, and sticking the beverages in the fridge so that they would be ready when I get home.

Looks like everything survived with minimal damage... it seems that the screw-cap on the large green bottle got a little loose, and leaked about half of the contents. But otherwise, everything is peachy. I went ahead and tightened the screw-cap, and placed the bottle in the fridge with the others.

Pic of the treasure I found inside the tourbox (https://photos-1.getdropbox.com/i/o/8y6vjE1supwrSYc6SkN-10gVRLQQ5hSJJxVcUUrE1lI?dl_name=100_1097.jpg)

When I get home, I shall have a tasting... and report my experience back to you guys to the best of my knowledge... although, I have to say, after reading the critiques you guys have posted on beers, it seems clear that I have learning to do. ;)

I wondered how that screwtop would fare in shipping...after packing it up & sending it off, I questioned if I should have tape sealed it. Now I know ;) Glad it all made it's way to you.

What we have there is:
Black Peppercorn Rye IPA (BPRIPA)
Chocolate Chili Porter (CCP)
Hop Wallop
Apfelwein (orig recipe)

Welcome to the more experimental side of my brewing efforts!

Did you find the sticker or did that get soggy?

Black Peppercorn Rye IPA

This is one of the beers that came in the tourbox from k4df4l.

Appearance:
see the pics:
pic 1 (https://photos-1.getdropbox.com/i/o/b_ASvhhuCGcnZZF6OvkXructi2sH7zSojFz07NmOY4o?dl_nam e=100_1107.jpg)

Small bubbly head that dissipated rather quickly. Some bubbling, and very little lacing. Cloudy dark golden color (I am sure the cloudiness is due to the aggitation of transport via UPS).

Aroma:
Floral.

Flavor:
Crisp hoppiness up front. The peppercorns are really shining through at the back of the tongue. Nice residual hoppiness in the after-taste. The rye malt seems to be present start to finish. None of the flavors are overpowering in this, very well rounded. Unline most spicy IPAs I have had, this beer isn't yelling "IBU IBU IBU" at me. I would dare say that this is probably the best IPA I have ever had for just sitting and drinking. Usually, I reserve IPAs for pairing with strong flavored foods (especially spicy) to compliment strong flavor with strong flavor. This beer, rather is a little more subdued and rounded than IPAs I am familiar with. MMMM... as I'm typing this, the rye popped back up in the aftertaste, and said "hi".
As the beer warms, there is a new flavor arriving... but I am having trouble putting a name on it... ahh... capers... which I guess is to be expected.

Mouthfeel:
Light and feels more carbonated in my mouth than it looks in the glass. Decent bubbliness in my mouth, and it likes to linger.

Overall:
As I said before, while I enjoy a good IPA, I normally consume them with meals rather than when I am just sitting and having a beer. But this beer is one that I can see myself cracking open just to drink. The flavors are more subdued than any other IPA I have had, and so I don't know if that was what you were intending or not... but it is quite pleasant to me, and I am now sold on the use of peppercorns in beer.

Thanks for the thorough review...glad you enjoyed the brew.

I really wanted to let the pepper come though on the flavor so I was a bit conservative with the hop schedule & also backed off on the gypsum that I would normally add to my IPAs...the IBUs are there, but distributed:
FWH - 1oz Willamette
60 - 1oz Columbus
40 - 1oz Columbus
Dry - 1oz Willamette

Commerical brew reviews could go where ever you guys want....but that's not a bad idea, to link it from here.

Got the box tonight, and man all i can say is that Thor is the guy that you want on the other end of the beer swap from you.

Thank you man

There was three bottles of homebrew mead and two commercial beers in there, I am a bit drunk tonight as i went to a homebrew club meeting tonight and we ahad a abunch of good beers there so I will be posting pics and comments next week after my trip to Chicago this weekend.

THanks a gain Thor. It will nbe a few days till I get the box sent off, but expect some goodies when I do!

ThorsSon
07-11-2008, 06:34 AM
well, since the mead and the braggot are in need of aging, I figured that it was only fair that I send some stuff that was ready to drink too (the quantity over quality rationale may apply too, since the braggot and honigapfelwein are kinda exerimental.

Also, the honigapfelwein isn't technically a mead, since the honey isn't the primary fermentable... In fact, it is just my twist on edworts apfelwein recipe (I replaced the corn sugar with honey, because I didn't have corn sugar)... I just tacked the german word for honey onto the front of the name to signify that change.

Hope you enjoy.

I was out of town for the weekend and have been working a ton this week, plus i am kid free (grandparents have him) for a couple of days so i have been trying to catch up on a bunch of stuff around the house.

The box will be going back out either on Friday or Saturday morning before I head up to the Indiana Microbrewers Festival.

Got the beers in the fridge and hoping to crack one tonight, going to let the meads and the braggot sit for a little while. Will post up threads when i get a chance to sit down and enjoy a beer.

No problemo! I am really perplexed by this one...it's really maturing oddly. When I bottled, it was a hot with a nice amount of rich chocolate and dusty cocoa. After a couple weeks, the chocolate disappeared and it's smoky heat on top of a mild porter. Now the chocolate is coming back into the flavor profile and some of the porter grain bill is starting to show up. It's hard to judge when the flavor is going to "stabilize" into something more predictable. The heat has mellowed a slight bit since brewday but not too much.

Got the tourbox yesterday, thanks WOP! Good choices all, none of the beers except one in the box are available locally, and I've been really curious about Gumballhead. I'm too lazy to post a pic, but here's what WOP sent:

Heileman's Old Style
Victory Hop Devil IPA
Three Floyd's Robert The Bruce
Three Floyd's Gumballhead
Dark Horse Brewing Double Crooked Tree IPA
RIS 888

I'll start sampling and writing up these brews this weekend, except the 888, that'll wait until 8-8-08. I'll ship the box out next week, I have two homebrews going in there, and I'm still thinking about what commercial brews to choose.

Thanks again.

The Victory beers are available locally, but I haven't tried Hop Devil, so it'll still be new to me.

Well, today's the day, so I cracked open WOP31's RIS from the tourbox.

Appearance: Black, opaque, creamy brown head that sticks around

Aroma: Toffee, roasted malt, raisin

Taste: Starts sweet, like a milk stout, plenty of roasted malt flavor, raisin notes. A smooth, subdued hop finish

Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy

I like stouts, but I'm not a fan of really big ones. Often they have an alcohol bite that I find unpleasant in conjunction with the sweetness and the roasted malt. I detected no alcohol bite in this beer, it tasted like a smooth creamy milk stout to me, and had me wondering just how big it really was until I stood up. Oh it's big, alright. This is an excellent beer, well balanced and easy to drink.

Just got the tourbox in! It's full of wonderful surprises!

Green Flash Brewing Co. West Coast IPA
Homebrew marked B
homebrew marked BA

Dale
08-18-2008, 11:36 PM
Glad you got the box and I hope you enjoy. The homebrew marked B is a Strong Bitter, I think it's pretty good. The BA is a Belgian-ish Ale that may benefit from some aging. It tasted great when racked to secondary, awful when bottled, but has been mellowing in the bottle.

dont worry, as soon as those bad boys get cold I'll be drinking them up. I've had pretty good luck filling up off the keg, I do the hose like you did, but I dont cut the pressure, I just let it foam a little and spill a little as well, fill it up to the right amount and cap it while its got foam in the neck, and it seems to hold good pressure in the bottle for so far a couple weeks. havent checked beyond that. I'm excited to get this box, who wouldnt want to get a Hungarian oak aged saison..... I'll have to share with Wop or he'll get butt hurt tho.

Seems like only yesterday that this started, and then BANG, its over. How long can we keep this thing going I wonder. I'm more than willing to put my name back on the bottom of the list if others want it to keep going. By then everyone will have new and different beers to share. It's almost the perfect beer swap I think. By the way Flann, I'm finishing off yours tonight, I got the wench and Belgian left. everything else has been so damn good I can't fucking wait. you shouldn't keep putting your name on the bottom. keep it where it is., just start adding people who want to continue after you. As long as people are interested this could be a HBC thing that just goes on. I guess you just have to have faith in the people here, and if they decided to not do it, that they would contact you and have you change the order.

Life has taken over for me since June - that was the last time I have brewed. Been slowly working on the new Brew Rack for the AG setup. There are some pictures in my gallery. Next step on that project is to get the 2nd burner so I can finish the boil keg and then its on to the painting.

I am thinking HOT PINK!

Why not just make it perpetual? Sign up whenever you want, your name gets added to the last on the list. No need to stop it, restart, etc.

Another thing that would be cool is to start an HBC recipe notebook with it...you include the notebook (maybe one of those 'journal' style bound notebooks) and you can write in your favorite recipe on a page, when it fills up it gets shipped out to Flanny and he can put the recipes in his recipe DB.

PseudoChef

I like that idea, but you could put tasting notes, love notes to the next recipient....what ever you wanted to in the book. Maybe limit it to one or two pages per stop on the list.

Maybe this needs it's own whole section, "the tour box" then it'll be real easy for everyone to find and sign up for. Plus the note book is a great idea. You not only post your tastings on the site, but that note book is where we should put the tasting results and notes. and what ever else you want to add to your page or two. obviously it'll fill up, so someone would have to be the keeper, I guess Flanny kind of falls into that position, Your site buddy. But it's cool, it's a keep sake, you know. I thought we agree'd already that the box would just go until no one has signed up, but just in case I better check, cause I want my name on that list.

So I got the box yesterday, and there was a bunch inside:

(2) Oktoberfest (homebrew)
(2) Maibock (homebrew)
(2) New Glarus Spotted Cow
(1) Spaten Optimator
(1) Belhaven Wee Heavy

Had an Oktoberfest, a spotted cow and the optimator last night.

Oktoberfest: Forceful hiss at the uncapping, followed by attempts by the beer to foam out of the bottle. Curiously, this didn't translate to overcarbing in the glass; in fact, there was very little head. The color is very, very dark, with slight ruby/brown highlights. Looks more like a bock than a festbier. On the nose I get tons of dried fruit and alcohol, with a slight soapiness and perhaps some twang. Enveloping everything is a subtle oxidized character. The palate is very strong, like a mini-belgian strong dark ale. Figgy, pruny, dried fruit character abounds, with an almost cloying nature about it. The oxidation really comes out here, and again there's a very slight soapiness. Overall, I would not call this a festbier by any stretch of the imagination. It's not a bad beer, per se, but it does have flaws (as noted). There's too many ale-ey esters, it's too dark and brooding, and it's really more of a BGSA than a fest. Wondering what your recipe was here, and thinking you might want to re-label this one.

Thanks for sharing!

BrewMeister Jeff
12-10-2008, 12:17 AM
I will give the label after I recover from being kicked in the nuts!

Just kidding. Soapyness? Do you mean it tasted like I didnt clean out the bottles enough?

It was an extract run at an oktoberfest so it could be dark from the extract cooking longer. Will try that one again with the Late addition Extract.

Thanks for the feedback.

Tourbox contents from Dave: I didn't do formal reviews, but these are the points that stuck with me.

Homebrewed Bitter: Malty goodness with almost a lager-like crispness; very clean profile. Well attenuated which helps the perfect example of how maltiness is different from sweetness. I would have personally like a little more hop character to come through, as well as perhaps a hint more ester profile from the yeast. However, great session/quaffable beer that I enjoyed.

Homebrewed IPA: Another great offering from Dave - this guy knows how to make a clean beer. Great balance of all hop characteristics in this one from a nice, smooth, but dominant bitterness to great flavor and aroma. I am curious to know what the hop varieties you used in this - I want to say some Simcoe and maybe even Columbus as I get a real dank-like aroma. While bitter, it is balalnced and really drinkable. If held to a scoresheet, I think this would have been in the 40s for me.

Bell's Cherry Stout: Now, I'll come right out and say it - I really didn't enjoy this one. It didn't have a great roast profile to me, and blending that with the cherry juice added this weird sourness that didn't mesh well with me. I really can't describe what I didn't like - it just seems the flavors didn't go well together for me. The stout itself could have been a creamier rendition, perhaps a milk/sweet stout type to make it more of a dessert-like beer.

Have a Bell's Expedition Stout left that I am holding on to for a rainy day.

Thanks, Dave! I'll try to ship out to Fireballmatt next week.

I think you hit what I was going for with this brew. I wanted a nice, session ale, that really showed how something simple and light could embody the qualities of a fine ale. Interesting note on the ester profile... maybe next time I'll try S-05 at a slightly warmer temp.

If held to a scoresheet, I think this would have been in the 40s for me.

Personally, I don't care for this IPA that much. It lacks the American citrus profile that comes from cascade and centennial...both of which aren't in this brew. The bitter hops were warrior with simco and amarillo making up a steady addition over the last 45 minutes (a la dogfish head) then an all amarillo dry hop. I think it has a kind of gin quality to it. I do think the body and color were perfect, just not quite the hop character I was going for.

I have found this beer is a love it/hate it beer. I prefer the sour cherry flavor, most don't.

I have found this beer is a love it/hate it beer. I prefer the sour cherry flavor, most don't.

Yeah, I was kinda cold on that one too. I thought that the sour cherry flavor was a bit one sided & overwhelmed the majority of the stout flavors. This is the only Bells stout that I have sampled so far that I haven't liked...java stout, double cream and expedition are all tops.

Hell, I dropped my first expedition in the parking lot of my GFs old apartment and licked the last renaming puddles of sweet dark nectar off the glass shards. I almost teared up.

So k4df4l was so gracious and sent me a very nice selection of beers.

Avery Old Jubliation Ale

This is an English Strong Ale from Avery. I will say that just about every Avery beer I have had as been top notch, and this one is a home run.

After the pour, I noticed nice plum/raisin aromas... delicious. First sip immediately brought a nice malt taste, that was quickly backed by a very nice, smooth roast barley flavor. The finish was woody, the roast flavor lingering, hint of chocolate with a slow ingress of plum flavors. This is a winter ale, and at 8% would keep you warm with no problems.

Troegs Brewing Nugget Nectar

I have never heard of Treogs brewing, but being a hop head, seeing a bottle labeled "Nugget Nectar" got me all hot and bothered.

What I really liked is that it wasn't heavy on hop bitterness, but concentrated on heavy hop flavors and VERY intense hop aromas. I poured the glass, and immediately became lost in hop aroma heaven. It had a very floral, grassy aroma. The first taste was nothing but hop. Hop, Hop Hop. After that initial woosh diminished, I noticed the beer being quite sweet. Not malty, but sweet. It really worked well though since this beer was about hops. I think the sweeter taste really helped to compliment the hop flavors.

So far, great beers... I can't think you enough k4df4l!! And what a perfect celebratory 100th post!

This is an awesome idea. All I can picture is a little suitcase with stickers from all these places stuck all over it. I am still experimenting and what not so when I get some good beers on the shelf I will add myself to the list.

Things have been moving rather slow lately...let's pick up the pace on getting this going from member to member!

Anyone who is on the route and has yet to get the box ff you want out, let me know.

If it's coming up to you and you don't think you can't get it back on the road with in a reasonable period of time, let me know and I can move you down the list or take you off the route, your option.

Remember, this is more about sharing what you have and what's local

So let me get this straight. Person A sends a box of beer to Person B, Person B sends a box of beer to Person C, etc, comprised of homebrew and regional beer? How many beers are in this box? Any other details I should know?

Since it look's like I won't be up real soon I would like to do this, although I am terrible at reviewing beer, but I'll try. I need to get going on trying some more local beer. Only had a few.

Pretty spot on - the only thing different is that the recipient can elect to perhaps not drink some of the beers they receive if they don't think they'll like that style, and they just keep them in the box, exchanging out the ones they do sample.

It really depends on how fast the turn around is on the folks ahead of you...right now you have a few months at the minimum.

Gotcha. How many beers are in a box?

http://www.homebrewchatter.com/board/f14/tourbox-t1154/

1. a box of 3-4 beers is created and sent from participant to participant
2. the tourbox can have homebrew and commercial beer
3. get something in the box you know you won't/don't like? beer it forward, no hard feelings
4. you have to re-package and send the box in the same week or very soon after
5. if you lose the box or it gets dinged in shipping, you make a new tourbox and resend
6. must be of legal age in your place of residence, ect, ect
7. other items can be tossed into the tourbox but nothing illegal/alive/decomposing/ect (use common sense)
8. After you get the box, take out your brews..refridge, sample, review and post in a tourbox thread

If you're interested, PM me your info...The first post in this thread has the current route and where it's at

What ever happened to the idea of the "tour bottle"? I think it was either Jeff or Redweasel that mentioned that when Red sent that huge bottle out. I have a bottle that I would be willing to send out, of couse this may limit the list to people who keg. I will look tonight for an apropriate box for it, we could have both going and start a new tracking thread for just the bottle.

Apologies for the no/slow communication and the delay in getting this thing out. I've been home for exactly 3 days in the last 3 weeks and it's played havoc with anything I'd hoped to do. So, by way of apology I've included 4 bombers in the box. I got it packed up during my lunch break but have yet to close the box up. The wife hijacked my packing tape and now can't find it, so I sent her to buy more so I can tape it up tonight. I'll drop it by UPS tomorrow morning on my way out of town.

Here's a pic of what's included. I got a Terrapin "monks revenge" in the tourbox that was sent to me (first time I'd had it) and loved it so much I went out and bought 4 more. I've included one in this box. The Highland Brewing Co is located in Asheville, NC. About as close to "local" as I've got down here, I got lucky during my last business trip and found a place that had it. The Royal Stout, Freaktoberfest, and AB are just some of my favorites, so I put em in there. Again, sorry about the delay, hope you are happy with the haul!

Yeah, I've not had any time to brew over the last few months. For that matter, I've not had time to do anything in the last few months. I did manage to get 2 kegs filled before things got hectic, so have a nice Nut Brown and Chocolate Oatmeal Stout on tap. The Stout is probably about to kick though :(

I'm hoping that once I get back home on Monday things will calm down again and I'll be able to brew a Cream Ale. It's gotten HOT down here (100*F+ today), so a nice light ale's just the ticket for the southern summer.

Man, sounds like that Choco oat stout sounds like it would have been nice to throw a few bottles into the box! I'm hoping that it gets back around to me while the Big Red and Kolsch I have conditioning are at their prime to send out...still struggling a bit with consistent carb bottling off the keg.

Yeah, I would have loved to have sent a few of the Stout, but I've been unable to manage to bottle from the keg and maintain carbonation for anything longer than a day yet. I'm pretty darn close to just going and ordering a beergun from NBrewer even though I really don't want to spend money on it.

I think for my next several batches I'm gonna just get some carb tabs and bottle a dozen or so then dump the rest in the keg. That way I've got some bottles to send around should the need arise. If not, I can just drink em.
