Well we just got a huge down pour. My street was a river from curb to curb and thats no joke. Gutters got clogged and water ended up filling one of the basement window things that went from top to bottom of the window and water was pouring in. Ended up with about 1-2 inches of water in half the beer room/utility room. Nothing damaged so far. So far only part of the basement that floods with very heavy rain. Back yard was a lake. Fun fun. I miss apartment living. LOL

That's why we don't have basements in Florida....

I feel your pain (http://www.homebrewchatter.com/board/f19/a-few-questions-regarding-the-rather-minor-issue-t8785/), Shrek. I've since installed a permanent sump pump (http://www.homebrewchatter.com/board/f19/bring-on-the-fucking-monsoon-t10569/).

You have a battery backup on that thing? All the pump power in the world won't do you any good if you've got nothing to power it.

Looking into it, actually.

I have a sump pump and there was no water in that at all.. And on top of that, for some reason that room slants away from the sump pump.. Go figure right..

something like that. I guess they put in a drain tile before we bought the house. So that might be part of the problem.

I'll be happy to sell you a backup generator with automatic transfer switch...

If you are city water, i.e. you have water when the power is off, you can get a water jet sump pump for a backup. They work, all you need is good water pressure coming into the house, no electric. Search water jet sump pump.

The problem, though, as I said, is that I've already installed a traditional sump pump without backup. I just need some kind of inline backup on the power supply side. I'm thinking along the lines of the UPS computer backups...but I'm not sure how much power those supply versus how much power a 4k GPH pump like mine needs.

Looks like (from this OTS solution (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=100055241&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_sku=100055241&ci_src=14110944&cm_mmc=shopping-_-googlebase-_-D26X-_-100055241&locStoreNum=6841&marketID=68)) that a 12 V car battery with 6.5 Amps will power a 1k GPH @10' of lift. Also looks like requirements for 4000 GPH are pretty steep. OTS solutions look like they'd run ~$650 or so. And all of it is lift dependent, not just GPH.

Also, what is your pump rated for (Amperage)?

Yeah, I figure I'll eventually just get a generator. And to be honest, none of the major basement flooding incidents I've had here have been accompanied by a power outage. It's more like those 5 days of constant downpour things that slowly saturates the ground, culminating in one huge torrential dumping of water. Usually, the shit that cuts out our power is ice storms or microbursts, etc. We did get a LITTLE water in the basement back when we had that first microburst in june, but it was just enough to fill up the sump pit, and when the power came back on, it was immediately pumped out. I mean, if this was a finished space, that'd be different, but I can deal with a little water sitting there for a day or so until the power comes back. But eventually, I guess I'll probably just get a generator (would be nice to have anyway).

When compared with the price of a battery backup it's well worth it to get a generator. The only advantage I can see is if you are away from the house and you get that situation.

My FIL has one that he's going to give me, but I have to make a spot for it first. Just one to run the fridge and some small stuff, esp the circulation fan on the Furnace and the ignition. That really sucks when the power goes out in the winter and we lose heat.

Yeah, I'll probably just end up getting a generator. Then I can run other shit too...

As for it happening when we're out of town...well...I look at it this way:

A) I've never had my basement flood substantially during a power outage.
B) I've never had my basement flood substantially while we are out of town.
C) I have awesome neighbors who have checked on the basement for me before when I was away.

So, it really would have to be the PERFECT fucking storm for the one time it floods AND power goes out to be when we're out of town AND none of my cool neighbors are around. And if all that actually does go down, well, fuck it, I guess my basement gonna be flooded. I certainly am not going to spend the thousands of dollars it costs to get an auto-transfer whole home generator deal, for the 3 or 4 times we lose power a year.

Nice thing about a small Gen is that you can run your freezer on it if the power is out, like you said, lots of handy uses.
